Cornish-based Origin open their flagship coffee shop in London
Visited on the 21 June
Cornwall based Origin Coffee Roasters open their first London shop in early June, a multifunctional space that is a coffee shop, training facility and technical support centre. Located in Shoreditch on Charlotte Road, their new location works as a base for their booming retail and wholesale sales and their local wholesale accounts including the high profile Soho House Group.
The interior is simple and modern, with the dark wooden cladded bar contrasting the polished concrete floor and a clean white worktop. On the bar they have a La Marzocco Strada EP and two Nuova Simonelli Mythos grinders alongside a dedicated brew bar with Chemex and v60 filter options. A prominent feature behind the bar is a mural by John Kilburn, a quirky finishing touch that catches the eye of passersby.
The cafe is currently showcasing their single origin coffees and we couldn’t resist drinking them as both espresso and filter. Firstly we chose to have the Guatemala Finca Las Ilusiones served as a flat white, a bright summery espresso that worked well with the milk. We followed this with a cup of their bulk brew, a Brazil Fazenda Pantano, a full flavoured coffee with chocolate notes. We were impressed with the range of coffees that they had available, it was enjoyable to see a cafe showcasing a variety of single origin coffees on their menu.
We were also able to have a sneak peek of their training centre in the basement, a functional space with two La Marzocco Linea machines and a Nuova Simonelli Mythos grinder. They are an authorised SCAE trainer, joining the likes of Prufrock Coffee who also have this certification. Origin are serious about their coffee and this new unit will be an excellent base as they expand these activities alongside their roastery business located Cornwall.
Jack and Kes were both working behind the bar and it was great to chat to them both during quiet moments in the shop. We were interested to hear their intention to avoid offering a wide range of food, instead focusing primarily on the coffee and their training centre downstairs, using this space in London as primarily a showcase for their coffee. I look forward to revisiting and drinking more coffee from Origin as their seasonal selections change in the upcoming months.
