In iris & june, victoria finally has it’s own decent coffee shop.

visited on the 24 april

For years Victoria has been in desperate need for a decent coffee shop, as the area has been slowly filled with soulless chains and as equally soulless coffee, so when we heard about the opening of Iris & June we had to visit. It is located approximately 10 minutes from the station, tucked away on a quiet road behind House of Fraser.

They serve Ozone's Empire espresso blend, a Brazil based espresso with sweet and chocolatey notes. These beans are typically a darker roast but the quality of the baristas recent training with the team at Ozone was exemplified by our flat whites as the chocolate and sweet notes shone through with no bitter or sour taste. Unfortunately there was no filter coffee menu when we visited earlier this year, but I understand that they had plans to introduce aeropress and pour over coffees in the future.

They also cater well for the lunch crowd, with a wide of variety of salads, sandwiches and cake, all of which they regularly share on their Instagram. Their focus is good quality wholesome food, with no corners cut as they proudly list their suppliers on their website, there is no penny pinching here which is refreshing to see. As well as coffee they sell a variety of soft drinks such as Karma Cola, Breckland Orchard and Chegworth Valley, a welcome break from the San Pellegrino coffee shop domination. There are also a selection of drinks for the non-coffee drinkers, such as tea and hot chocolate.

"Their focus is good quality wholesome food."

The coffee shop is surprisingly large, the staff were welcoming and happy to speak to us as we poked around their shop asking questions. The cafe is stripped back, clean and modern, with a focus on functionality of the space. Their La Marzocco Strada E alongside an EK43 and uber boiler sits on the sleek tiled bar that runs the length of the shop. This chilled atmosphere is welcoming in the busy Victoria hub, creating a place for people to enjoy a coffee and some food.

“Finally Victoria is no longer the ‘black hole’ in London’s scene.”

Whoever chooses to rival Iris & June will have a lot to live up to. I expect great things from these guys as the shop evolves over the coming months.
